Art Is Life

The wonderful people at Aall and Create have just begun the International Tournament of Art and Craft and Challenge 1’s theme is Europe.

I created a mixed media canvas board incorporating all of the prompts!! Of all the continents, I feel Europe has the richest history of the arts: painting, sculpture, literature, poetry, music, architecture…. and I drew inspiration from this for my piece.

My base layer is some Basic Grey scrapbook paper – blue with a distressed effect on it (part of the Lime Ricky collection I think). I added visual texture with my Seth Apter stamps from Impression Obsession. I stamped the broken letters and borders with Distress Oxide inks in Walnut Stain and Broken China, and the crackle design with Watering Can Archival Ink. I love how these designs just blend into the background creating a soft layered effect, nothing too obtrusive, I used a paper distresser to add texture around the edge of the paper, inking with Walnut Stain Distress Ink before gluing to the canvas board with Decoupage glue.

I rummaged through my ephemera collection looking for some vintage pieces. I have an old edition of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice (very apt for our Europe theme!!) and took out the page with Portia’s famous speech. Some Distress Ink around the edges deepened the natural aging of the paper. I have some old manilla tags with string – I took one and stamped onto it with Paper Artsy’s Social Butterfly stamp using Black Archival Ink, again I edged with Distress Inks to add more definition. I wanted to use some of my vintage tickets, and decided to ‘frame’ them with this wonderful Spellbinders Seth Apter labyrinth die cut. I cut it from brown card and used Inka Gold and Metallic Lustre waxes to give it a real metallic look.

I wanted to give the piece a title – and die cut the letters ‘art is life’ from an adhesive cork sheet using a Tim Holtz Sizzix alphabet die. These also added some extra texture to the piece – the cork is very tactile.

To finish off, I spattered some gold, black, and white paint around the piece just to add extra interest and tie in with the metallic finish on my die cut.
