Time and Tide

I have always loved the sea and having just returned from a lovely holiday at the coast, still have the sea air fresh in my mind.

I created this piece for Andy Skinner’s ‘Time’ challenge using an ATB from Calico Craft Parts, DecoArt Media acrylics and Modelling Paste, and some seaside related ephemera.

Mixed Media ATB - Time and Tide

I began by assembling the cube and then coated it with DecoArt Media white gesso. Once dry, I applied the DecoArt Media white Modelling Paste with a palette knife over the sides and top, creating a ‘choppy’ texture.

I let that dry completely before brushing on DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics in  Primary Cyan, Cobalt Teal Hue and Titanium White – blending the colours in stripes around the block. I wanted to create that feeling of vastness – where the sea meets the sky on a far distant horizon. The choppy texture references waves and clouds and gives movement to an otherwise flat surface.

The top of the piece holds a collection of elements – a small message in a bottle, washed up on a far flung beach….nestling amongst some natural fibres and shells.

The title of the piece, stamped onto card, inked and cut out, then glued to some driftwood.

I love how this piece turned out, it evokes so many holiday memories for me through it’s colours and textures, and recreates the peace that I feel when I’m sat looking out to sea.

Thanks for stopping by and listening to me wax lyrical about my art!!

  1. How wonderful that you created this as a fun remembrance of your seaside holiday Teresa. The texture makes it so look like an ocean view and it’s so neat that you used the drift wood for your sentiment. It’s a lovely and peacefully happy creation.

And now with my DT team hat on – let me thank you for joining my “A Beautiful Mess” challenge at OUR CREATIVE CORNER!! j.

  2. Very pretty. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely creation with us at OMCFC.
