Like many crafters, I have difficulty throwing things away, even if I don’t particularly like them any more. This birdhouse was one of the first pieces I ‘altered’ – giving it a shabby chic look several years ago. Since then it has spent time both in my ‘do over’ box and bin, yet each time I go to throw it out completely, I retrieve it and put it back in the cupboard. Finally I decided to Use It Or Lose It!!
This is how it looked to begin with:
I didn’t want to have to sand off the crackle glaze that was on there, so I covered the birdhouse with some card that I had embossed and some corrugated card for the roof.
I used some of Andy Skinner’s Timeworn Techniques and my DecoArt Media acrylics to create the rusted metal effects.
Love the texture on the corrugated roof:
A subtle rusted iron effect on the embossed ‘riveted plates’
Lots of texture around the ‘window’.
The finishing touch was a Prima Junkyard Findings metal grille for the bird hole.
This will look great on my shelf now that it has been updated with it’s cool industrial styling. Hopefully I’ve inspired you to get out your paints and give an old project a new look!
Stunning birdhouse and love the rusty roof
What a magnificent makeover!!! Love it!!
