Always and Forever

Now that Christmas and the New Year celebrations are over, the next date on the crafting calendar (except for family and friends’ birthdays) is St Valentine’s Day.

I wanted to make something with a romantic theme that could be kept on display all year round. So I got my needle and thread out, and came up with this design for a hanging heart.

heart decoration

I cut four wing shapes from unbleached cotton. I needed the wings to support themselves, so used some iron on interfacing on the back piece of each wing to stiffen it slightly. After stitching around the edge with right sides together (leaving a small opening), I turned the wings right side out and added a tiny bit of polyester stuffing to stop them from being completely flat. I then top stitched around the edge and added the wing detail using black thread.

Once I’d finished both wings, I cut two heart shapes from red fleece using pinking shears for a decorative edge. I pinned the wings and a hanging loop in place and stitched around the edge of the heart with black thread leaving a small opening. After filling with stuffing I stitched the opening closed.

I used a set of alphabet stamps and some black Distress Ink to stamp the words onto more of the unbleached cotton. After heat setting the ink, I ironed some interfacing to the back and cut the words out with pinking shears. These were then hand stitched onto the front of the heart with cream thread.

The whole thing only took an hour or so (including making my templates) and would be easy to personalise for a loved one or as a wedding/engagement gift.
